Der Facharzt für Psychiatrie und Psychotherapie (auch "Ärztlicher Psychotherapeut", "Psychiater") behandelt psychische Störungen und Erkrankungen. Zum Beispiel ist er Ansprechpartner bei Ängsten, Depressionen, Essstörungen, Süchten und Zwängen. Bei der Behandlung spielt die auf Gesprächen und Verhaltensübungen basierende Psychotherapie eine große Rolle. Sie kann ambulant oder - in Fällen geringer psychischer Stabilität - stationär durchgeführt werden. Anders als Psychologische Psychotherapeuten dürfen Fachärzte für Psychiatrie und Psychotherapie auch Medikamente verabreichen (Pharmakotherapie). Ein möglicher Schwerpunkt ist Forensische Psychiatrie (gerichtliche Psychiatrie, zum Beispiel Beurteilung psychisch kranker Straftäter).
