Griech. orthos = "gerade, aufrecht", paideia = "Erziehung"
Der Facharzt für Orthopädie befasst sich mit der Diagnose und Behandlung von Erkrankungen, Form- oder Funktionsfehlern des Stütz- und Bewegungsapparates. Hierzu gehören Knochen, Muskeln, Sehnen, Bänder und Gelenke. Orthopäden sind so beispielsweise Ansprechpartner bei Arthrose, Osteoporose oder Bandscheibenvorfällen. Eine wichtige Aufgabe ist auch die Prävention, zum Beispiel durch die Korrektur von Haltungsschäden im Kindesalter. Die Bezeichnung "Facharzt für Orthopädie" wird heute durch "Facharzt für Orthopädie und Unfallchirurgie" ersetzt.
