Griech. anaisthesia = "Empfindungslosigkeit"
Der Facharzt für Anästhesiologie (auch "Anästhesist", "Narkosearzt") beschäftigt sich mit Methoden der Schmerzausschaltung sowie der Schmerzbehandlung. Hierzu gehören im Einzelnen: die Vorbereitung und Durchführung von Narkose und Lokal-Anästhesie, die Überwachung von Patienten nach Operationen im Aufwachraum, die Sicherung lebenswichtiger Organfunktionen auf Intensivtherapiestationen und in der Notfallmedizin sowie Schmerztherapie bei akuten oder chronischen Schmerzen und Palliativmedizin (Schmerzlinderung und Aufrechterhaltung der Lebensqualität bei Patienten mit nicht heilbaren Krankheiten).
Ausbildung: Medizinstudium + fünfjährige Weiterbildung
